Medical gaslighting is a form of manipulation that occurs when a patient’s symptoms, experiences, or concerns are dismissed or invalidated, leading them to question their own perception of their health. It can have very serious consequences for people with Lyme disease, including:
- Delayed diagnosis: Patients may be misdiagnosed with other conditions, which can delay treatment and make symptoms more persistent.
- Inadequate treatment: Patients may not receive the proper treatment for their condition.
- Psychological distress: Patients may experience anxiety, depression, PTSD symptoms, and trauma.
- Lower quality of life: Patients who feel invalidated by their doctors may have a lower quality of life.
